What type of care is available for TBI patients through DVBIC?

Individuals treated at DVBIC receive a comprehensive evaluation consisting of the following examinations:

  • Neurologic
  • Psychiatric
  • Neuropsychological
  • Psychosocial
  • Laboratory
  • Audiologic
  • Electroencephalograghic (EEG)
Additionally, patients admitted to any VA site receive:

  • Rehabilitation
  • Physical Therapy
  • Occupational Therapy
Other evaluations (i.e. neurophalmology, dental, ears, nose and throat, etc.) may be completed if a need for these services is identified. Treatment is provided by dedicated professionals and is base on individual goals, in an interdisciplinary team setting.

What is the goal of treatment through DVBIC?

Our goal is to provide of expert case management and individualized, evidence-based treatment to each patient to maximize function and decrease or eliminate TBI-related disability. We work to provide services and supports to help the individual with TBI return to duty, work and community.

Is there a specific set of treatments or services DVBIC provides to each and every patient?

No, because traumatic brain injury (TBI) results in a broad range of physical, cognitive, behavioral, emotional and social challenges. Treatment and services are based upon the individualized needs of each patient. DVBIC is committed to providing excellence in care that addresses the wide ranging needs of patients and their families.

Who can refer patients to DVBIC?

Patients may be referred to DVBIC by primary care and other physicians/health care providers, family members, or by self-referral.

How can we refer a patient to a DVBIC site?

To request services for active duty military or veterans who were injured while on active duty, call DVBIC Headquarters at our toll free number 1-800-870-9244 between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. EST to speak with our staff.

Referral sources may contact the Centers directly to begin the referral process that includes a review of all related medical documentation. Referral sources are encouraged to contact a DVA TBI Center as soon as possible to plan for transition to the next appropriate level of care.
