Military Sites

The military sites provide outpatient, consultation and case management services for military personnel with traumatic brain injury (TBI). The sites work with and support Medical Treatment Facilities in all four armed services. Each site offers specific areas of expertise in TBI clinical care, including concussion treatment and prevention, treatment of mild and complicated mild head injury, symptom management, return to duty, and vocational rehabilitation. Case management services work with military and TRICARE agents, as well as with VA case managers. Each of the lead sites are accredited by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Health Care Organizations

Walter Reed Army Medical Center

The Walter Reed Army Medical Center, located at Washington, DC, is part of the Walter Reed Health Care System. It is a partnership of the Army medical facilities at Fort Belvoir in Northern Virginia, Fort Meade in Maryland, and Walter Reed in Washington, DC. The Walter Reed Health Care System is the Army's largest health care delivery system providing over 1,500,000 outpatient visits, over 15,000 ambulatory surgeries and almost 15,000 inpatient admissions to beneficiaries from the National Capital Area and from around the world.

Wilford Hall US Air Force Medical Center

Wilford Hall Medical Center, at Lackland Air Force Base, TX, represents the largest medical facility in the United States Air Force. This acute care facility provides complete medical care to military in the south central United States and specialized care to patients from all over the world. In addition, the medical center's support of San Antonio's emergency medicine structure is unique in the nation. Wilford Hall and Brooke Army Medical Centers participate fully in the trauma and emergency medicine care of the San Antonio and south Texas civilian communities, with each military medical center receiving approximately a fourth of the city's emergency ambulance missions. Wilford Hall is the Air Force's foremost provider of medical education.

Naval Medical Center, San Diego

The Naval Medical Center, San Diego is an acute care hospital consisting of 342 inpatient beds and 44 clinical departments. In 1996, over 1.35 million people were treated on an outpatient basis at Naval Medical Center, San Diego. Besides an active clinical service at the Naval Medical Center DVBIC site, a clinical concussion care program exists at Camp Pendleton, CA.

VA Sites

In addition to Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Health Care Organizations accreditation, each VA site maintains specialized accreditation by the Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities for the treatment of individuals with TBI. Each VA site has dedicated interdisciplinary teams with specific expertise in the treatment of TBI. The VA sites provide comprehensive, interdisciplinary, inpatient TBI rehabilitation, as well as outpatient, case management and consultation services.

The inpatient acute and subacute programs delivery the full range of interdisciplinary rehabilitation services involving physical, occupational, speech, and recreational therapies, as well as physiatry, psychiatry and psychological services. Outpatient programs provide post-acute rehabilitation services for active duty and veteran personnel in their local areas. Depending upon their needs, individuals may be followed in the Outpatient programs for life.

Each site also offers specialized case management services, which use a systems-based, outcome-focused model that promotes continuity of care and effective utilization of services. The case management system serves to coordinate and integrate services, resources, and communications among the patient, family, military and VA.

Civilian Partner Center

Its multidisciplinary staff offers a broad range of services including medical care, case management, occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech-language pathology, cognitive rehabilitation, life skills training, clinical psychology, vocational counseling, and neuro-visual screening.
