DVBIC-Johnstown: Community Re-Entry Program

“Laurel Highlands Neuro-Rehabilitation Center”, only the second civilian site to become a core DVBIC site, was founded in 2006 in Johnstown, PA to provide community integrated rehabilitation through a transitional living program and a day treatment program. In October of 2008, Laurel Highlands combined services with the outpatient clinic to become “DVBIC-Johnstown”.

INDEPENDENT LIVING SKILLS THERAPY PROGRAM

Community re-integration for each client is the goal of our Independent Living Skills Therapy Program.
  • The program features an intensive program that offers weekly modules emphasizing topics relevant to a more independent life at home, in the community, and at school or work
  • Skill- building sessions are incorporated to emphasize:
    • meal planning and preparation
    • grocery shopping
    • community service
    • fitness and community recreation
  • The program also addresses cognitive-behavioral, neuromotor, and social skills necessary for participation in community- based activities.
RESIDENTIAL PROGRAM

Our transitional living house provides group living in a safe, family-like environment with:
  • 24-hour supervision and assistance as needed by the patient
  • Supervision of self-administration of medications
  • Meals
  • Supervised assistance with household tasks
  • Participation in the therapy program
  • Opportunity to participate in community activities and events
  • Recreational and exercise equipment on site
INDEPENDENT LIVING
  • Quarters provide independent living in a home-like setting.
  • Clients are responsible for managing their medications and all aspects of independent living.
  • Group and individual therapies are provided.
  • Clients must be engaged in therapy, pre-vocational placements, volunteer job or paid work.
PRE-VOCATIONAL PROGRAM

Returning to productive employment is a common goal that becomes a focus of therapy in the community re-entry program. We provide:
  • Career exploration, situational assessments, work adjustment training, job site assessments, and supervised volunteer work experiences.
  • Clients desiring to further their education are guided through the process
  • GZ's Used Books and Art, a used book store with arts and crafts, is operated by the DVBIC-Johnstown clients under staff supervision.
